How to: your Spring wardrobe essentials

Posted by Bianca Picherit on

This year more than ever we’re welcoming Spring with open arms, and flinging open our wardrobes to select the pieces which will become our ultimate go-tos for the coming months.

We love the onset of warmer weather, wearing lighter fabrics and packing away our winter woolies for another year. Spring is the season when trans seasonal dressing is a must, so keep in mind that layers are key when the weather changes daily from chilly to warmç.  As with all the best seasonal guides, choosing a tonal palette for the season is the key to making sure each piece can be worn multiple ways and can be swapped in and out of different looks seamlessly.

The second of our  Style Series went live on IGTV this week, with Bianca's edit for the ultimate guide to Spring wardrobe essentials – the foundation pieces for the season with which you can create a plethora of stylish outfits.

Spring Go-Tos

Jax and Jack jumpsuit

For us, jumpsuits are a Spring essential, they’re the effortless solution to tricky trans-seasonal dressing. An easy-to-wear jumpsuit falls into the same category as a dress. Throw it on, pop on some accessories and you’re done. We love linen in a neutral colour for a super versatile option that can be dressed up or down with a simple change of shoes.

Maxi dress

Always on-trend and super versatile, a maxi dress is a must-have for any wardrobe.  Pair with a denim jacket and kicks for cooler, running around days, add a tonal blazer and heels for a perfect work or lunch with the girls look – maxi dresses make dressing effortless - a polished and feminine option for the whole season.

To make your maxi work even harder for you, layer it under a short-sleeved knit and you’ve got a “skirt” and top option for a totally different look!

Lightweight Knit

This wardrobe essential needs no explanation. A lightweight knit can be styled with everything from linen pants and sandals for an effortless daytime look, and then popped over a dress or the skirt from your co-ord set with barely-there sandals for a simple take on after-dark dressing.

Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is a year-round must. It’s the ultimate outerwear piece for Spring – throw over everything from your favourite activewear, floaty maxi dress, lightweight pants – you get the picture  - it works with everything, and yes, we’re here for double denim too.

The Statement piece

No seasonal wardrobe would be complete without a special piece – the wardrobe hero (or should that be heroine) that makes you feel amazing and is anything but basic. This will be an investment piece so choose wisely to give it longevity, look for subtle print or solid colour in a muted tone, making it easy to "refresh" with a simple change of accessories.  Some of our favourites are from Zimmerman, Lee Matthews, Matteau, Ganni and Scanlan & Theodore.

Spring Separates

Co-ord Set

A simple two-piece set is one of those shortcuts to looking polished that we love for Spring. You can also wear each piece as separates, paired with other pieces from your Spring wardrobe and you have yourself a number of brand-new looks – genius!

Logo tee

Super versatile, logo tees are the perfect option for everything from low-key day looks, to polished evening dressing.  So much more than a humble t-shirt – the logo tee is a Spring essential which pairs with denim, linen, skirts, prints – all the while adding an element of cool to every outfit.

One shoulder top

A big trend for this season is asymmetrical necklines. A one-shoulder top will update any existing pieces in your wardrobe, and pairs perfectly with denim, feminine skirts or a tailored pant, showing just the right amount of skin for day or night.

Light wash denim

Spring calls for a move away from black jeans and skinny jean styles to lighter washes and straight-leg and cropped jeans styles. We love a high-rise, wide-leg cut this season.

Spring Basics

Top with a Twist

Spring is time to add a little fun into your day – this season, experiment with silhouettes, prints, oversized cuff. Look for a style that’s a little something different and enjoy!

Classic white shirt

Whatever the year, a classic white shirt will still save the day when it comes to “what to wear” mornings. Invest in a quality white shirt for your wardrobe as you’ll wear this Spring staple on repeat.

Lightweight pants

A pair of lightweight pants make the perfect go-to for cooler Spring days, we love linen in muted tunes, drop-crotch cotton jersey for a casual look, or a more tailored cotton pair as a great alternative to jeans which can be easily dressed up or down. Pair them with sneakers and a tee or add a top-with-a-twist or white shirt and a heel to take the look into date night or office-dressing.

How to create an off-duty capsule wardrobe

Posted by Bianca Picherit on

There's a lot more talk about capsule wardrobes thanks to the reality of more time  at home and less time spent curating office appropriate looks or attending social events. The first of our Style Series went live on IG TV this week, with Jen's edit for the ultimate capsule wardrobe for off-duty days.

Building a capsule wardrobe might sound daunting, but we think it’s just about the best money and time saving thing you can do for your closet!  Put simply, all you need to do is edit your wardrobe down to your favourites – those that fit your body and your lifestyle the best.  Then create looks from pairing these key items, leaving you able to focus more on quality over quantity, by adopting a more sustainable approach to shopping through a curated wardrobe, investing in key pieces that will stand the test of time.

The Off-Duty Capsule wardrobe also makes mornings SO much easier. Think getting dressed in autopilot with an interchangeable, tonally curated selection of pieces which make getting dressed (chicly) so much easier.

And so, to the clothes! You’ll find details and tips on our eight key pieces for off-duty dressing below.  Essential to any capsule wardrobe is to choose a colour palette, and stick to it. We LOVE neutrals at Trading In Style, and our off-duty selects are almost always in hues of grey, black, white and ecru with the occasional addition of a knit or tee in a soft colour.  By keeping things neutral, you can be sure that all your pieces can be worn with one another, making outfits a breeze even on the most hectic of mornings!

Trench Coat

Trenches are super versatile and the perfect to shape to suit every body. Throw a trench over everything from jeans and a tee, to trackies, or a white shirt and leather pants.  Timeless and stylish, a trench will dial up the chic on even the most casual of outfits.

bike short blazer style

Everyone needs a classic blazer in their wardrobe. It’s a piece we recommend you invest in, the perfect fitting black blazer will take be your trans-seasonal best friend, and pairs just as beautifully with jeans and your logo tee or crisp white shirt as it does with black bike shorts and your favourite kicks.

For a fun alternative to black, add a textured or statement blazer to your off duty looks which will take any outfit to the next level.

Logo Tee

It’s the piece that needs no introduction. Logo tees are here to stay, add this staple to your off-duty capsule now - we guarantee you will wear it to death. Pair with jeans, tracksuit pants, with s skirt, denim cut-offs, leather pants, the list is endless!

For a capsule wardrobe we’d suggest at least two pairs of jeans. Wide leg high waist styles in your choice of a darker denim or classic, lighter wash will be your best friend and solve every “I don’t know what to wear” morning by being there for you every season. We love the freshness of white denim for Spring, and a muted black tone to add just the right rock edge when paired with a logo tee.

Leather Pants

Our first note on leathers?  Invest in them now and you’ll never look back.  Comfy, easy to dress up or down, super durable – they are not just for nights! They really do make the perfect #lockdown pants. Pair with a neutral knit and flats or hoodie and trench when the weather is cool.

When it comes to knitwear, neutral tones are the perfect capsule wardrobe additions.

A simple ribbed or round neck piece in cream, beige or grey marle is an essential off-duty wardrobe piece. Cardigans are having a major comeback, you can layer them or wear done up over jeans or leather pants on cooler days – they’re another trans-seasonal must have.

Denim Shorts

Any off -duty wardrobe would be incomplete without a trusty pair of denim shorts. They’re a staple in most of our summer wardrobes for years, pair them with your logo tee and a blazer, oversized white shirt and flats or hoodie and your favourite Golden Goose and you’re ready for an off-duty day whatever that looks like in your world.

We know, track suits used to be “at home” wear, but 2020 changed all that and now they’re a 100% wardrobe must-have. Matching sets are our favourite for simple off-duty dressing, but the versatility of the set means that you can wear the two pieces separately with jeans, shorts, tees and a denim jacket or a trench to up the sophistication and bring your whole outfit together.
