The Chanel Flap Bag: A contemporary classic

The Chanel Flap Bag: A contemporary classic

The bag everybody desires. Join us for a deep dive into one of the most recognisable handbags of all time: the Chanel flap bag.

The Chanel flap bag is, without hyperbole, a truly iconic luxury handbag. Instantly recognisable, these bags are beloved, not just for their ability to retain a high percentage of their original retail value on the resale market due to regular price increases and strict scarcity, but also for their timeless elegance, versatility and expert craftsmanship.

The Classic Flap, aka the 11.12 – in spring 2021, Chanel renamed the Classic Flap the 11.12, in tribute to the original Medium Classic Flap's style code, A01112 – is the preeminent and most iconic style of Chanel bag.

Introduced by Karl Lagerfeld in 1983 as a modern update to Coco Chanel's historic 1955 2.55 design, the Chanel Classic Flap comes in two main variations: the Single Flap and the Double Flap. This bag features diamond matelassé quilting, a sliding leather woven chain strap and thoughtfully placed compartments, including a hidden zip pocket and the interlocking CC turn-lock, which replaced the original rectangular "Mademoiselle" lock of the 2.55 bag.

Designed for wearability, the bag's clean structural lines and versatile sliding chain strap allow it to pair with both casual daytime outfits and formal evening wear, while features like the multiple internal compartments and the exterior back slip pocket – originally designed by Coco Chanel for loose change – combine functional utility with fashion.

Each bag requires over 180 coordinated operations, taking up to 15 hours of labor over multiple weeks, relying on the expert craftsmanship of roughly 15 to 30 skilled artisans.

Commonly made from soft lambskin or durable, textured Caviar (grained calfskin) leather, the bags range from Extra Mini to Jumbo and Maxi. But, with an ever-expanding array of sizes, materials, and quilting styles, the Chanel Classic Flap Bag continues to stand the test of time with continued retail price increases for Classic Flap bags which have reinforced strong resale demand across all sizes, particularly for the Medium and Jumbo models.

The Reissue or 2.55 is also, of course, a much loved flap bag from Chanel. Designed by Coco herself, and named after its birth date, the 2.55 revolutionised women's fashion by introducing a sleek shoulder chain, freeing women from carrying clutches. The 2.55 features the Mademoiselle turnlock closure, and an all metal chain called the "bijoux" chain.

Most recently, Matthieu Blazy’s flap bag designs for Chanel (beginning with his Spring/Summer and 2026 collections) have reinterpreted the classic house codes with softer structures paired with the functional, everyday oversized proportions.

As of 2026, Classic Chanel Flap bags retail from approximately $5,600, depending on size, which has led in turn to pre-loved and resale demand across Chanel’s core handbag styles.

What size should I buy?

From Nano to XXL, there is a Chanel flap bag to suit all styles, outfits and (sort of) budgets. The hardest part is choosing!

Please note: exact sizes may vary depending on year of production and fabrication.

The Mini Rectangular Flap Bag: 20cm × 12cm × 6cm

The Mini Flap, which was introduced in 2010, is favoured for its compact, crossbody-friendly design. It can accommodate all of your daily essentials while maintaining the elegance of the larger Classic Flap styles. The Mini Flap is only available in a Single Flap style, which makes it a more accessible yet equally desirable alternative to its larger counterparts.

The Medium Classis Flap Bag: 25.5cm x 15.5cm x 6.5cm

The Medium Classic Flap is the most popular and iconic size. For those investing in their first Chanel handbag, a vintage Medium Double Flap in black lambskin with gold hardware is often the number one recommendation. Chanel bags from before 2006 are particularly prized for their 24K gold-plated hardware and the unique patina that older leather develops over time.

The Maxi Flap Bag: 33cm x 23cm x 10cm & The Jumbo Flap Bag: 30cm x 20cm x 10cm

The trends are leaning back towards oversized bag, with the Maxi and Jumbo bags available in both Single and Double Flap styles, popular among the It Girls who count their laptop as a daily essential. Or, you might fall in love with a travel size XXL flap bag, which are limited release and can be up to half a metre long.

There are also, of course, all of the seasonal, collectable flap bags which are released each collection which are fabricated from a wide range of materials, from shearing to PVC to sequins to silk, and everything with a top flap is technically a "flap bag" which means the term also encompasses the Boy Bag and even the Wallet on Chain styles.
