Who could have imagined that one of the most coveted objects of recent decades would be born in the sky, in 1984, on a flight from Paris to London? British actress Jane Birkin, sitting next to Jean-Louis Dumas, Executive Chairman of Hermès (1978-2006), was complaining that she couldn't find a bag suitable for her needs as a young mother. 

The Birkin is available in a rare heritage leather with unique character. Entirely vegetable-tanned natural cowhide has an exceptionally transparent finish that gains a patina and becomes even more beautiful over time. Smooth or grained, this leather in a natural shade emphasizes the Birkin’s clean lines and will appeal to connoisseurs. – Hermès

This Birkin 40 is crafted from large grain heavy Clemence leather in Tosca, retourne style with silver-tone Palladium hardware.

Hermès Clémence leather (Veau Taurillon Clémence) is a heavy, durable bull-calf leather introduced in the 1990s, prized for its soft texture, matte finish, and relaxed slouch. 

The bag is lined with smooth tonal leather, with one internal zip pocket and a slip pocket. As is consistent with the weight of Clemence and the age of the bag, there is a beautiful natural slouch to the leather but the bag remains in beautiful condition. There is almost imperceptible wear to the belt straps. The hardware stickers are still in tact.
