Bec Harding's Wardrobe Edit

We speak to Bec Harding, the ultimate it girl, about her style, what influences her dressing and why she is consigning her wardrobe with Trading in Style. Such a breath of fresh air and positivity.

How would you describe your style?

I'd say my style is a true mixture of classic and tomboy. I usually dress based on the mood I'm in at the time, one day I’ll feel like dressing strong and masculine, the next day I’ll feel like being more feminine and put on something pretty, frilly and fun.

My Mum has always had an influence on my style. Although, she is quite traditional and classic, and I’m a little be more eclectic.

Can you tell us about some of the pieces you have consigned and why you have decided to part with them?

The magenta velour Alex Perry Skirt that I bought for a work trip to Paris is one of my most favourite pieces I’ve ever worn. When I posted it to Instagram, I had so many comments and questions about it. No doubt that will be a hot item! I’ve worn it a few times now and felt that outfit was so iconic. It definitely needs a new loving owner and another great night out!

The Sergio Rossi heels I bought during summer fit like a glove and I had an outfit in mind to wear them with. But my feet must have been swollen when I tried them on and sadly they are too big! I'm sorry to be letting them go, but they deserve to be worn and not sitting in my wardrobe. Similarly, the N 21 shoes I bought for a wedding in Byron Bay, but on the day it was raining and I wore a closed toe shoe. I've never had the chance to wear again, so hopefully someone else has a fabulous outfit to pair them with.

The Zimmermann Lorne dress is STUNNING. It was bought for photoshoot and I only wore it once, but I saw it a lot after the fact and felt like I wore it more! It’s such a standout piece and it needs another life.

What has been your most memorable collaboration?

The one that immediately comes to mind, and one of my most favourite outfits I’ve ever worn, was in 2019 for Stakes Day. It was this incredible head-to-toe Dolce & Gabbana look in collaboration with Net-a-Porter. Really, it was quite feminine for me, but so much fun to wear. I even wore this incredible embellished crown and matching earrings. Such a dream and so easy to put together.

I had a work trip I took to Paris with Kérastase for these incredible power talks. To one of the talks I wore the white denim Magda Butrym set. It was such a cool, strong and empowering look, almost like the Wonder Woman body suit. I felt strong and confident and someone else deserves to feel as strong as I did in this outfit.

What are your go-to designers for every day and event dressing?

I like to combine high end and high street for everyday dressing. A go-to is always a classic, crisp white tee, I'll often turn to Uniqlo or Flore Flore and then I’ll try and mix in something bold and fun. Magda Butrym is always a go-to designer for a mix of feminine and masculine styling, and Scanlan Theodore are fabulous for classic tailoring.

You’ll always find me in sneaker – I have an extensive sneaker collection! I wear a lot of adidas (did love a Stan Smith back in the day) and at the moment I’m really into the classic Samba sneakers. Gucci always do a great sneaker and I wear a lot of New Balance too.

Putting together a look for an event is always a bit of fun. I like to create a character so I will often find a person or something to embody which will influence how the outfit comes together. For example, a recent party had a specific year theme - 1964 - I worked with my stylist Elliot Garnaut and designer Effie Katz to create a Jackie Kennedy style. We researched the era and took inspiration from the outfits she wore during this period - ¾ gloves and big flat bows in the hair. So much fun!! And last year for the Logies, Elliot and I put together this amazing Rick Owens outfit. It was super paired back, cool but effortless and sexy but elegant. I really love working with brands and designers to create something bespoke. Local Australian designers are always wonderful to work with.

What are you coveting for your 2023 wardrobe?

There is a revival of a bag that Jacki Kennedy wore back in 60’s of this gorgeous, cream leather Gucci bag. I’m definitely coveting this for 2023.

I alway watch and am inspired by the fashion overseas, which is tricky as they are a season ahead of us! I’m already looking for cream, ankle length coat. Not overly practical, but a long cream coat is so gorgeous! And I'm always searching for a fabulous pair of boots!
