Start with a vision:
What are you looking for? Are you building a capsule wardrobe, hunting for a forever bag or keeping an eye out for a fun, statement piece? Having a vision helps you filter faster: you often don't have the luxury of "sleeping on it", so you'll need to be prepped to make quick decisions. But, the joy of shopping pre-loved is in the surprise, so make sure you leave a little room for serendipity.

Make a mood board:
Collate a Pinterest board or photo album of people whose style you like, or specific pieces you are searching for – that way you’ll have a visual reference which can serve as a reminder of what your style goals are, and to keep you on track when you're shopping.
Remember: it is possible to track down new trends, but sometimes you’ve got to put in a little extra legwork.

Size doesn't always matter:
Vintage and archival pieces can vary wildly in sizing – especially pre-2000s. Focus on measurements, fit, and fabric rather than the number on the tag. Try things on when you can, and always ask questions about fit and style if you're not sure.
A good tailor is your best friend.

Play the long game:
Resale (and fashion in general) is cyclical – so that piece that got away might resurface! Check in regularly, set up a google alert for rare pieces, let us know what you're looking for, and make sure you are signed up for the Trading in Style newsletter so you never miss a drop. And when you do see something you've been looking for, it's wise to move fast – the best finds rarely linger.

Pre-loved is pre-worn:
Shopping pre-loved and vintage inevitably means putting up with the odd scuff mark or missing sequin, but don’t see these as flaws. There is a great deal of beauty in imperfections. In fact, certain leathers are chosen specifically for the way they tend to patina and show wear as they age.
It's very special to own an item with a past, and each little mark or sign of wear is a little reminder to the life the piece had before you found it!
TIS Tip: A good leather conditioner or a visit to a bag spa can be a nice way to breathe a little bit of life into a older bag.

Don’t be afraid to resell:
Contribute to the eco-circular fashion cycle by consigning your own pieces when you feel like you're finished loving them and give someone else the chance to enjoy and give them a new lease of life.
