Getting away for a weekend, week, or perhaps longer, is on the top of our wish list this festive season, it’s been a crazy year, and we’re looking forward to spending some time with our loved ones, relaxing and making the most of an Australian summer.
Packing however is not relaxing – it’s a real art – and one that we’ve spent a few years perfecting. So, if all that’s stopping you heading off on a well-deserved beach break is the thought of how to stuff ALL of your favourite summer pieces into your suitcase, we’re here to help!
Read on for our top tips on your FIVE summer holiday essentials.
1. Denim shorts
No Australian summer break is complete without a pair of easy-wear denim shorts.
They're the piece you throw on without too much thought and are the perfect holiday piece to be dressed up or down. Whether you go for a slouchy, frayed cut-off style or prefer a high waisted, tailored pair – denim shorts are a must pack item!
2. Slip skirt
The best summer holiday wardrobe is all about key pieces which can be worn in a number of ways, dressed up or down with a simple change of shoe or accessory. The slip skirt is everything you could want in a summer vacay piece, easily folded for iron-proof packing, and so versatile – wear with a simple white tee and your favourite kicks, then swap to a pretty blouse or silk cami and a neutral heel, and you’re ready for dinner or drinks at the bar.
3. White dress
If you’ve followed Trading in Style for a while, you’ll know there’s little we love more than a white dress! For summer, white dresses offer so many options for chic day-to-night looks. Take your pick from lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen from our favourites, Zimmerman, Jac + Jack and Innika Choo.
4. Linen pants
Although 2020 was the year of the track pant and we loved embracing these cosy home comforts during the cooler months, summer calls for something more lightweight and chic especially when we’re holidaying.
Relaxed linen pants are a summer essential – wear with a loose linen shirt over a bikini top for a casual day look or add a tie-dye tee or singlet for a pop of colour. When the sun goes down, add statement gold hoops and bracelet stack, and head out. The joy of summer dressing is that linen elevates any look, and has a simple chicness we just can’t get enough of.
5. Neutral-toned statement dress
Whilst we’re all about packing light, we’re not willing to let style suffer, and this summer we’re all about the simplicity of a neutral statement dress to wear for a city break, beachside vacay or resort-style holiday.
We’re loving muted-toned statement dresses from Hannah Artwear, Ulla Johnson or Sir as the “special piece” to pack for our break. Worn with simple flats in the day and a wedge or heel for an evening out, your statement dress can be dressed up for a night out with a few accessories (we love to find special pieces on our travels to mix things up a bit) – and try adding a belt to create a different silhouette.
And our other summer essentials?
We’ll be throwing a new novel, a wide brimmed floppy hat, a pair of statement sunnies and at least two swimsuits into our basket bag this summer.
Taking a vacation is all about feeling refreshed, and after all that 2020 has thrown at us, we can’t wait for a little time to chill out!
